I am a multi-award-winning author, educator, and expert witness, specialising in the assessment of both mental capacity and financial vulnerability. I am a registered Mental Health Nurse and Specialist Mental Capacity Assessor. I habook,ver 30 years of experience working with individuals with impaired cognitive stcolleges.educed mental capacity.  I have been assessing mental capacity in line with the Mental Capacity Act (2005) since its inception, alongside other relevant case law, and to date have conducted and supported others to conduct in excess of 4000 mental capacity assessments.  My book ‘Grandpa on a Skateboard: the practicalities of assessing mental capacity’ is considered a core text at many Universities and Colleges across England and Wales. My CMSL model for setting the threshold of understanding has been adopted by both the University of Bournemouth and the Burdett Trust for Nursing and is referred to in ‘The Mental Capacity Toolkit’.  In 2022, I presented at the International Congress of Mental Capacity on the topic of Setting the Threshold of Understanding, and in 2024, I chaired a discussion panel on Mental Capacity and AI at the STEP International Congress. I have also been a plenary speaker at numerous other industry events, both national and international. I regularly train legal, financial and health professionals in relation to the practicalities of assessing mental capacity and was asked to create the mental capacity learning module for the Professional Deputies Forum.  Furthermore, I have provided consultancy services for several large financial organisations (both national and international) in relation to the development of their customer journeys for those experiencing mental capacity issues as well as the development and delivery of staff training on the same.  I have been published in over 30 industry journals. In 2021 I co-founded Comentis, a web-based SaaS company which built upon my proprietary assessment models to create a web-based tool for the assessment of mental capacity and also the identification and support of vulnerable customers. In 2024, I returned to the field of face-to-face assessments and set up my current company, Tim Farmer Ltd, where I specialise in the assessment of mental capacity. Through both my nursing and my mental capacity assessment work I have gained experience of working in the following fields; Mental Capacity (including litigation, brain injury and complex communication)Adult Mental Health (including Adult Admission Wards and Adult Community Services)Forensic/ High Secure Mental Health ServicesLiaison Psychiatry (including Suicide Assessment and Prevention, Dementia, Alcohol Services)Young Peoples Residential Services (including Eating Disorders and Self Harm for those considered by the NHS to be ‘treatment resistant’)Learning Disabilities (both community and hospital based)Individuals deemed to be NeurodiverseAboriginal Mental Health Services
